Information Sheets

In conjunction with the Australian Government, the following information sheets are provided to assist you in understanding how Territory Housing will be assisting in the management of remote housing.

What is Remote Housing NT?
Remote Housing NT is a new system to manage public housing in remote communities across the Northern Territory. Find out more about Remote Housing NT (pdf 32Kb).

A New Look for Tenancy Management
The Australian and Northern Territory Governments are working together on a new housing system for remote communities, so people can live in healthier and safer homes.

This will mean changes to the way that houses in many Indigenous communities across the Northern Territory are managed and improvements to tenancy management services. Improved tenancy services will mean better living conditions, fairer waiting lists and more access to tenancy support services. There will also be new job and training opportunities in remote communities for local Indigenous people. Read more here.

More Focus on Repairs and Maintenance
The Australian and Northern Territory Governments are working together on a new housing system for remote communities, so people can live in healthier and safer homes. This will mean improvements to the service delivery for housing repairs and maintenance in remote communities, which will help ensure the health and wellbeing of Indigenous Territorians.

The new system will see Territory Housing responsible for the delivery of all housing repairs and maintenance in remote communities. The new Shire Councils have been offered a grant to continue to deliver repairs and maintenance on behalf of Territory Housing. This arrangement will allow more time to establish formal contracts with the Shire Councils. Read more here.

What is leasing?
Leasing is the process by which the Australian Government or the Northern Territory Government obtains the use of Aboriginal land for an agreed period of time. The government then becomes the leaseholder and is therefore responsible for any houses on the leased land for the period of the lease. Find out more about leasing (pdf 62Kb).

What are the different types of leases in remote communities?
Within Remote Housing NT, there are three types of leases referred to:

  1. Township leases
  2. Housing Precinct leases
  3. Five Year leases

Find out more about different lease types (pdf 68Kb).
