Public Housing Going Dry

The common areas of nine public housing unit complexes have been declared ‘dry’ from Monday 11 February at the request of tenants across the Territory.

The Northern Territory Government made the announcement after receiving many requests to seek a solution to anti-social behaviour at unit complexes.

Amendments to the Liquor Act passed in Parliament last year give Minister for Licensing, Dr Chris Burns the capacity to declare dry areas if he is satisfied such a declaration is in the best interests of the community.

Tenants and their visitors will still be able to consume alcohol in their homes but in common areas including walkways, driveways, carparks, gardens and stairwells no one will be able to drink or carry opened alcohol.
